Supporting Durrës municipality transition towards sustainable and resilient sanitation and drainage services

Durrës, Albania

A port city founded in the 7th century BC along the Adriatic Sea Coast, and the 2nd largest urban area in Albania with a population of 150,000 inhabitants, Durrës Municipality is a fast growing tourism destination with 1.5 million visitors in 2025.

In terms of sanitation and drainage, Durrës Municipality will require a significant capital delivery programme for the:

  • rehabilitation and modernisation of outdated and insufficient infrastructure, built post WWII between 1950 and 1980;
  • ramping up of services to support the urban expansion along the shoreline, boosted by tourism and port activities;

To help address these challenges, we are currently delivering two projects funded by Agence Française de Développement, aiming to support the Durrës Municipality transition towards greater sustainability and resilience, with a positive impact on water quality and biodiversity in the wetlands and the coastal environment.

  1. In partnership with Abkons, Veolia is in charge of the development of the 2025-2050 Sanitation and Stormwater Drainage Master Plan for Dürres Water and Sewerage Utility (DWSRU) Service Area;
  2. In partnership with Artelia and Abkons, our team is engaged in the detailed design, ESIA / ESMP and preparation of tender documents for the upgrade and extension of the Durrës WWTP, and the rehabilitation and extension of sewerage networks.

Both projects are undertaken on behalf of AKUK (National Water Supply and Sewerage Agency) and Dürres Water and Sewerage Utility (DWSRU), and represent a great opportunity to showcase Veolia’s know-how and expertise in sustainable and resilient sanitation and drainage infrastructure planning, design, construction, and O&M.
