Electricity grids and battery energy storage systems (BESS)

We guarantee the performance of electricity grids and support the deployment of battery storage systems to optimise their performance.

Electricity grids now sit at the heart of the energy transition and the drive to provide access to essential services. The large-scale integration of new uses and sources, particularly intermittent renewables, is making grids around the world harder to operate and increasing the risks of congestion, dynamic instability and power cuts. These disruptions are often compounded by ageing infrastructure and high commercial losses, which degrade the quality of service.

To address these issues, power utilities must modernise their control and metering tools, optimise revenue recovery, and stabilise their grids to ensure a continuous supply and restore investor and consumer confidence.

The challenges of the energy transition and grid management

Our comprehensive approach to resilient, high-performing electricity grids

We support our clients from initial planning through to recommissioning, taking all relevant regulatory and technical considerations into account.

1. Grid analysis, modelling and diagnostics

Power flow, dynamic stability (DIgSILENT PowerFactory) and short-circuit studies, complemented by field audits and economic analyses, to determine the optimal sizing and siting of investments.

2. BESS solution sizing and engineering

Sizing of energy storage systems (BESS) to increase grid flexibility, integrate renewable energy, provide ancillary services and ease congestion.

3. Operational performance and loss reduction

Grid modernisation through diagnostics, smart meters, GIS tools and recovery plans, including performance-based financing.

4. Regulation and transaction support

Work on cost-of-service (CoS) tariff studies, regulatory frameworks and grid codes, as well as on the transaction phases: EPC tenders, technical specifications and PPAs.

Our flagship projects

Optimisation of low-voltage grids and BESS deployment in Senegal

Commissioned by the Energy Sector Regulatory Commission (CRSE) and the Senegalese national electricity company (Senelec), our team audited 40 low-voltage networks. The assignment produced a 120-measure plan, the validation of the SAIDI/SAIFI continuity indicators and the structuring of US$6.5 million in financing to strengthen the grid's operational performance.

Grid stabilisation and renewable energy integration through BESS in São Tomé and Príncipe

To tackle the island's power cuts, we led the modernisation of the electricity system of the national operator, EMAE, integrating 45 MWp of solar generation. The project included the sizing of a 12.5 MW/3h BESS, dynamic stability studies and an overhaul of dispatching.

Improving commercial performance and grid management in Guinea

Under a 48-month management contract signed with Électricité de Guinée (EDG), we took charge of turning around national operations. The asset inventory carried out by our teams enabled us to create a GIS, recalibrate protection systems and deploy prepayment meters for 500,000 residents.
